FAQs

Potomac Moving Company

  • Why do you base compensation on the weight of the item?

Our compensation policy is based on federal law. The department of transportation mandates that all moving companies under the federal motor carrier safety administration's jurisdiction must offer free coverage of $0.60 per pound. We also provide options for increased coverage at additional cost. This standardized approach ensures fair and consistent compensation across the industry.
  • Does Potomac Moving Company charge a booking fee?

Yes, we require a $100 deposit for local moves, which is deducted from your final bill upon job completion. You can reschedule without penalty if done at least 7 days before the move. For cancellations or rescheduling with less than 7 days' notice, 50% of the deposit is refundable. We recommend booking early during peak seasons to secure your preferred date.
  • What is a truck fee or travel time?

The truck fee covers the use of one truck for a day, including essential moving equipment like furniture dollies, tools, and protective blankets. It also serves as transportation for our moving crew. While it might seem cheaper to rent a truck yourself, once you factor in all associated costs, using our fully equipped truck often proves more cost-effective and time-efficient.
  • How long will my move take?

The duration of a move varies greatly due to factors such as floor level, packing thoroughness, elevator availability, and distance to the truck. We provide estimates based on averages of similar moves, but the actual time may be more or less. We charge only for the time worked, ensuring fairness for both parties. Our crews always work efficiently to complete your move in a timely manner.
  • What if traffic delays my move?

Unfortunately, traffic conditions are beyond our control. We continue to charge our standard hourly rate until your move is completed, regardless of traffic delays. Rest assured, we're as eager as you are to complete the move efficiently.
  • What size truck do you use on a move?

We primarily use 26' straight moving trucks. For unusually large volumes, please inform us in advance so we can adjust accordingly. If a second trip is necessary, we'll charge for the additional time. While larger 18-wheeler trucks are available, they significantly increase costs due to higher truck expenses and driver training requirements. Therefore, we typically opt for a second trip or an additional 26' truck when needed.
  • Why don't you cover items that are moved from or into a storage unit?

Once items are placed in or removed from a storage unit, they're no longer under our direct control or supervision. As we can't guarantee their condition or security in these circumstances, we're unable to extend our coverage to items in transit to or from storage facilities.
  • Why don't you cover press-board furniture?

Press-board furniture, composed of compressed sawdust and glue, is not designed for longevity or repeated moves. Its structural integrity can degrade over time and with multiple relocations. While we handle these items with care and provide protective wrapping, we can't be held responsible for potential damage due to their inherent fragility.
  • Will Potomac Moving Company protect my floors & walls?

We take extensive precautions to protect your property during the move. This includes padding door frames, hard surface floors, and railings, as well as installing protective floor runners throughout your home. We also carefully wrap all items, including glass shelves and table tops. Upholstered furniture is covered or shrink-wrapped, and mattresses are bagged for protection. • Does Potomac Moving Company disassemble and reassemble furniture?

Yes, we offer comprehensive furniture services. Our team will disassemble furniture as needed for the move, then reassemble all items at your new location according to your instructions. We ensure that all furniture we've taken apart is properly put back together in your new home.
